1883 cover + letter JB Lyall PILIBHIT India

1883 cover + letter from JB Lyall at PILIBHIT India to GB . JB Lyall was Revenue Commissar in Afghanistan. Roughly opened.
"PILIBHIT 1883
Alfred is very well and makes I think a very good Lt. Govn. and a sufficiently popular one though he is then supposed by some men to be unduly suspicious. I have been with him at Lucknow for just about 2 weeks and engaged on a Committee which has to report on a Rent Bill for OUDH rendered weaker by a State of things very similar to that which brought about Mr Renton Tenant Right Act in Ireland.
Did you ever read the accounts of the Siege of the Residency at Lucknow in The Mutiny of 1837. The Residency homes still stand riddled with shell and cannon shot and pitted all over with bullet marks. I wandered over the place with great interest it was a most gallant sojourn I visited the tombs of Sir A. Lawrence, Bavistock, Dodson and many other men who died in the struggle. Many ladies also were killed by shell and bullet during the siege.
You will have heard of my promotion I am extraordinarily lucky. I hope I will prove deserving of it."

1884 cover + letter Lieut Governor's Camp SITAPUR

1884 ps cover + letter from AC Lyall at Lieut Governor's Camp, NWP with s/r. SITAPUR p/m. to GB. Roughly opened.
"1884 LIEUT GOVERNOR’S CAMP  N.W.F.
P1 We are out at a place called SITAPUR within 200 yards is the place where the English residents, men women and children, were massacred in June 1857 and one compares the calm scene now with what might have been seen there 27 years ago. I can never in my heart forgive the Natives of India for killing the women and little children; nor can I forget the charge that lies on the Govt in this……..
P2 ………country for keeping order; since further outbreaks would bring on grave risks to the very numerous families, far more than in 57, now centred in recruiting over India. However I can see no cloud in the intermediate horizon; but the panic that the St. James Gazette and The Times have been trying to stir up, is ill [conceived?]
P4 Lord DUFFERIN is expected next week; and much else is expected of him, people have resolved that he will be everything a Viceroy should be – he will have one or two hard nuts to crack on arrival. I bid farewell to Lord Ripon at Arga – the next Viceroy will outstay me – and so will end 30 years or so of Indian work. One month hence I shall be 50."

1887 cover + letter Lieut Govrs Camp AC Lyall

1887 cover + letter from AC Lyall at Lieut Govrs Camp with NAIN-TAI p/m. to GB with boxed TO LATE h/s. to rear. Worn.
"LIEUT GOVRS CAMP 1887
I am much concerned about Alfred, but I cannot venture to ask Stewart Hodgson direct to give him my long leave. Hodgson might turn nasty and say he better leave – I know the city firms are strict about leave giving. But I will get Harry to sound Hodgson, and will try to arrange for a long leave in the autumn in connection with our plans…..
No news here clouds gathering – really …. Over mountains the forerunners of coming rain. Also, metaphorically on our N.W. Frontier “The van ward clouds of evil days” coming in Afghanistan were the Amir is reproducing our Richard 111.
He has killed all his men folk that he could catch, and all his chief nobles – he is now menaced by rebellion and mutiny and is straight on the way to Bosworth Field; except that his rivals are restrained by Russia and England from attacking him. What will follow his death or flight no man can say; but if Russia enters the country from the North and England from the South there may be “wigs on the green”. Still the contingency hangs over India just now, perplexing the natives with fear of change – "
