Gunboat diplomacy: At the turn of the century the Royal Navy maintained control of the Persian Gulf with three patrol ships, only one of which - HMS Lapwing [small gunboat]- was on permanent duty. 1904 was the year of the massive Persian oil strike in neighbouring Abadan.
