Fighting Nov. & riot in Dec. 1947. Ref: 308-134. mss.. "27.7.47 A short time ago Van Jasvelt went into Hornby’s store (you know G, Hornby has bought Hayton – Walkers) and he asked the price of something which Hornby told him. V. J said “oh that’s frightfully dear!” “Get out of my store” Hornby shouted and saw him out ! A bit later Mrs Tilley – who has taken up ? since her husband died went into the store about 3.30 and said she had come to fetch the Michael’s Furniture (which had been left there) as it was wanted for their new house – “Get out of my store! You can’t have it now!” shouted Hornby. “But I must have it, they want it” said Mrs Tilley – Whereupon Hornby up and - hit her !!! Mrs Tilley screamed – The man who was with her, called Wilson heard her and dashed into the store – Hornby hit him in the face …. …. …. & laid him out. But not quite out – He got up again and went for Hornby and hit him – knocked him down and banged hs head on the Floor – Wilson’s boy meanwhile had rushed in and gone for Hornby, - Hornby’s boy had gone for Wilson – A third boy rushed off for the police – meanwhile who should come into the store but the acting judge ! The case has been heard – in ‘Camera’ –we hear Mrs J – Wilson claimed £300 – but the result has not so far come to hand but of course it will. a lady a ?... had cause to mistrust her husband missed him in the night. She got up and set fire to three native huts out of one of which ran her husband! The case is rendered serious by the fact that the dead body of a native was found in the tengo ? nearby next day and it is supposed to have some bearing on the case. This last affair however ? – too serious to be much talked of except in whispers – I have no idea of the rights of it.
