Air Force

Air Force mail including the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Air Force (RAF) incorporating RAF censor handstamps together with wartime airmails and their rates and routes.
At the end of WW1 the Royal Engineers and RAF pioneered International Air Mail Services by setting up airmail routes between Folkestone and Cologne in Germany serving the British Army on the Rhine.

1944 (April) ps Air Letter from GB to 'Air Cadet Atkinson, c/o Officers' Mess 22 SFTS, RAF Thornhill, S. Rhodesia'. Flying Officer A J Atkinson was killed in a Flying accident whilst training as an RAF pilot at 22 Service Flying Training School Thornhill in 1944. He was the son of Mr & Mrs R V Atkinson of Cheltenham, with RV Atkinson being a Director of the Gloster Aircraft Company. Ref: 313-123.

1944 (Nov) Air Letter from 'BNAF' to South Africa with s/r. EPP 31 p/m. [Egypt] and RAF censor R15/21 h/s. Self censored from 'L. Loram, 28 Squadron SAAF, BNAF'. [South African Air Force]. mss .. "this one (letter) is being written 4,700 feet above the immaculate blue Mediterranean". From June 1943 the Dakotas were concentrated at the squadron's new base at Maison Blanche, Algiers, from where it operated passenger and cargo routes across the Mediterranean. Excellent content.
