Air Force

Air Force mail including the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Air Force (RAF) incorporating RAF censor handstamps together with wartime airmails and their rates and routes.
At the end of WW1 the Royal Engineers and RAF pioneered International Air Mail Services by setting up airmail routes between Folkestone and Cologne in Germany serving the British Army on the Rhine.

1944 (June/Aug.) Letter Cards from ZULULAND to GB with d/r. DURBAN m/c. and boxed RAF Detachment, St. Lucia, Zululand h/s. From 'Bardsley, Mtubatuba, Zululand, S. Africa'. In Nov. Bardsley with 262 Squadron. [No. 262 Squadron reached Durban on 5 Nov. 1942, and moved into its main base at Congella one week later. The first Catalina flying boat arrived on 21 Feb. 1943, and patrols over the Indian Ocean began on 26 Feb. The seaways around Durban became increasingly full of shipping, to such an extent that it began to interfere with operations. The flying boats were moved to Langebaan and St. Lucia (Zululand), then in November 1944 into Lake Umsingazi] South Africa. Folded. Ref: 314-058.

1943 (May) Air Mail cover from AUSTRALIA to 'Sgt. Pilot Daly, V.P., Lambert, Larbert Military Base Hospital, Scotland' with part tied 3 OBC label and RAAF BASE PO No. 4 slogan m/c. (4d. RATE) [Sgt Vincent Patrick Daly a survivor, flew Spitfire P8276. On 16th. Jan. 1943 while returning from an unsuccessful search for a British Motor Torpedo Boat reported to be under attack by several German gunboats, the squadron encountered bad weather and heavy fog. Three aircraft, Vin's and those of two Canadian Pilots, crashed into the snow-covered mountains near the England-Scotland border. Vin survived the landing and after two days, during part of which he dragged one of the Canadians along with him before realising the man was dead, was found by a shepherd and his dog searching for lost sheep. His nose was crushed, his mouth torn and his feet severly frostbitten. After some time in Larpent hospital, Scotland, he was sent to Hoylake where he became a member of the Guinea Pig Club, as plastic surgery patients of Sir Reginald McIndoe were known] Roughly opened. The Squadron took part in operations against rebel tribesmen and insurgents on the Turkish frontier and received Victorias shortly before the famous evacuation of Kabul in 1928. Part flap missing. 1918 (Jan) cover GB to USA. 'Barksdale, Aviation Section, London'. RFC crest to flap

1918 cover GB to USA endorsed 'EH Barksdale, Aviation Section, American Embassy, London' with ST ALBANS m/c. and 'RFC' crest to flap. [Royal Flying Corps] 1st Lt. Eugene Hoy Barksdale, embarked for England 18 Sept. 1917, and received his flying training with the RFC at Oxford and several other aviation schools in England. He accepted his British commission 26 May 1918, at Markse, Yorkshire, and was assigned to the 41st Squadron, RFC in August 1918. He was placed on active duty at the front as a pilot He participated in the Somme and Amiens Offensives early in August 1918 and was wounded 2 September 1918 during the Cambrai Offensive. While on duty with the RFC, he received official credit for destroying three enemy aircraft through aerial combat. He also participated in the ground destruction of five other enemy aircraft. He left the RFC on 15 Oct. 1918, joining the U.S. 25th Aero Squadron until 24 Dec. 1918. Ref: 305-047.
