Aug. 1916, the Germans again sortied, this time to bombard Sunderland; Scheer hoped to draw out Beatty's battlecruisers and destroy them. British signals intelligence decrypted German wireless transmissions, allowing Jellicoe enough time to deploy the Grand Fleet in an attempt to engage in a decisive battle. Ref: 310-029.

Squadrons of the British RNAS sometime operated from Ten Bogaerde (Koksijde). These units operated along the Belgian coast against the installations of the German Navy. [Koksijde is a town and a municipality in Belgium. It is located on the North Sea coast in the southwest of the Flemish province of West Flanders] Ref: 308-031.

1916 (June) cover and letters. One to Lieut HM Fothergill, HMS Marlborough' dated 3rd. June seeing if he is all right. The other letter dated 4th. June from Fothergill on HMS Marlborough. mss … "we had a fight with the Huns and I don't think they will worry us again". Battle of JUTLAND 31 May to 1 June 1916. [Commander "Tom" [Henry Maclean] Fothergill spent six years in the battleship Marlborough, covering the entirety of WW1. Decorations were conferred by the Russian Government on Officers of the Grand Fleet for distinguished service rendered in the Battle of Jutland: Order of St. Anne. NB: Envelope very roughly opened. 1916 photograph SP 2157: Badly damaged battlecruiser SEYDLITZ, Battle of Jutland 31 May 1916. The ship was hit by one torpedo and eight 15 inch shells (five of which hit below the waterline) and eight 12 inch shells. She was badly flooded, this being exacerbated by steaming too quickly, 5329 tons of water were taken on board causing a list of 8 degrees to port meaning the ship was nearly lost. Ref: 307-024.

1917 (6th. Sept) Military PC from MALTA to Japan and censored. From Japanese Destroyer 'MOMO'. [The Malta squadron reinforced with the destroyers Kashi, Hinoki, Momo and Yanagi. The four 'Momo’ type cruiser including Yanagi arrived in Malta in August 1917 as the 15th Flotilla with cruiser 'Izumo' to add to the Japanese contribution to convoy protection in the Mediterranean. As the tempo of anti-submarine operations in the Mediterranean accelerated, Japanese sailors temporarily manned two British gunboats, which they designated the Tokyo and Saikyo, and two British destroyers, renamed the Kanran and Sendan] From 'Saito, Destroyer Momo'.
