1918 PPC HIJMS Yakumo during Operation in Indian Ocean to Truk Islands

1918 PPC [Singapore] from HIJMS Yakumo during Operation in Indian Ocean to Truk Islands. From Captain Tosu of Cruiser Yakumo in transit to South Pacific Islands To: Account Officer, Temporary Guard Unit of South Pacific Islands. mss .. “Thank you for your new year greeting. I suppose that you had difficulty during long service in South Pacific. I wish you may be fine. 6th February”.  In February 1917, HIJMS Yakumo under 1st Special Fleet which bases were in Singapore and Cape Town served to secure route of Indian Ocean began patrolling the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, searching for German commerce raiders.

Tamaki Tosu: from 1st December 1917 to 25th September 1918 during WWI, he served as Captain of HIJMS Yakumo. During the time, he was also Staff of 1st Special Fleet. 

HQ was at Tonowas (Dublon) Island of Truk Islands from December 1914 to 1918, when naval administration ended. Ref: 310-076.

She was damaged by a torpedo from the Austro-Hungarian submarine SM U-31 (or U-28) on 2nd. October 1918: Second Battle of Durazzo. 1919 PPC NORWAY to GB. Royal Navy Minesweeper. Northern Barrage Clearance

1919 (9th. Sept) PPC from NORWAY to GB with poor RFHMS m/c. From 'Dowdeswell', Royal Navy Minesweeper with the Northern Barrage Clearance. The North Sea Mine Barrage, also known as the Northern Barrage, was a large minefield laid easterly from the Orkney Islands to Norway. Royal Navy minesweeping efforts involved 421 vessels manned by 600 officers and 15,000 men from 1 April to 30 Nov. 1919. Twelve Lapwing class minesweepers and 18 submarine chasers were available. Strauss declared the barrage cleared on 30 Sept. 1919. Ref: 319-079.

1927 (April) Registered 'Shanghai Times' cover from CHINA to 'EF Bowen, HMS Emerald, Shanghai' with circ. SHANGHAI p/m. ER Bowen: Engine Room Artificer. British Light Cruiser HMS Emerald bombaded Nanking on 24th March 1927. HMS Emerald was serving in China in the Yangtse area when the Nanking incident took place in March 1927 during the capture of Nanking, by the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) in their Northern Expedition. Foreign warships bombarded the city defending the foreign residents against rioting and looting. Ref: 307-133.
