[Chinese Expeditionary Force] Also Taxe mark of 15 centimes equivalent to a surcharge of 3d. by the Foreign Branch Section. Excellent historic letter from Shanghai by Capt. Archibald Houison-Craufurd. 7 Bo. I. Dy. Asst. Adjt. Genl. 2nd Infantry Brigade. mss .. "I had 2 or 3 days last week embarking those .. 125 horses, 10 guns & 10 carts, which doesnt sound much after my Bombay experiences, but the appliances for loading & shipping here are nothing like what have in Bombay .. Another thing was that the Coaling had to be done down the Woosung 14 miles down the river after the transport had fit over the bar. 4 or 5 Regiments from the North are under orders to return to India this month. You seem to think that the Czar may have had something to do with Russia giving in about Manchuria. Im afraid his influence however good it may be practically nil, & I dont believe Russia has really given in all together about Manchuria yet. Also 1906 'Craufurdland Castle' PPC. Ref: 303-098.

c.1901 ps "Argus" Newspaper wrapper from the BOER WAR to Lt. Col. Money, 1st. Northumberland Fusiliers, SAF Force and redirected to '1st. Battalion NF'. [Siege of Lichtenburg 3rd Mar 1901: The latter part of the year and into 1901 the 1st Battalion was the last remaining unit under Lord Methuen and was still involved in endless treks. By February 300 of them were garrisoned at Lichtenburg along with 200 Yeomanry troops, and the battalion CO, Colonel Charles Money commanded the town. On 3rd March 1500 Boers under de la Rey attacked the place. The assault lasted from 3am until midnight but failed in their attempt. Two officers and 13 men were killed, 20 wounded. Seven other ranks were mentioned for bravery in dispatches] Ref: 312-001.
