1918 PPC HIJMS Yakumo during Operation in Indian Ocean to Truk Islands

1918 PPC [Singapore] from HIJMS Yakumo during Operation in Indian Ocean to Truk Islands. From Captain Tosu of Cruiser Yakumo in transit to South Pacific Islands To: Account Officer, Temporary Guard Unit of South Pacific Islands. mss .. “Thank you for your new year greeting. I suppose that you had difficulty during long service in South Pacific. I wish you may be fine. 6th February”.  In February 1917, HIJMS Yakumo under 1st Special Fleet which bases were in Singapore and Cape Town served to secure route of Indian Ocean began patrolling the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, searching for German commerce raiders.

Tamaki Tosu: from 1st December 1917 to 25th September 1918 during WWI, he served as Captain of HIJMS Yakumo. During the time, he was also Staff of 1st Special Fleet. 

HQ was at Tonowas (Dublon) Island of Truk Islands from December 1914 to 1918, when naval administration ended. Ref: 310-076.

1917 cover BARBADOS to 'Mr. DE Chase, Barbados Citizen Contingent, London'

1917 (Nov) cover from BARBADOS to 'Mr. DE Chase, Barbados Citizen Contingent, c/o AE Aspinall Esq, London' and redirected to 'Cadet Chase, RFC, Frith Hill Barracks, Blackdown, Hants'. One adhesive with 'WAR TAX' o/p. [Royal Flying Corps] The Barbados Citizens’ Contingent Committee was formed about the end of November 1915. the first two contingents which left Barbados in the 31st December 1915 and 5th April 1916, On arrival of the men in London, they were received by Mr AE Aspinall of the West India Committee, who put them in touch with various recruiting centres, and assisted them in joining their respective regiments. Special reference must be made to Mr Aspinall, to whom a large tribute of praise is due for all the trouble taken by him with the men sent over from Barbados, and for his ready help and sympathy extended to them on all occasions.

1914 (11th. Sept) New Zealand 'OHMS' cover from SAMOA to GB endorsed 'On Active Service RBN' with d/r. APIA / SAMOA p/m. Samoa Expeditionary Force (SEF) Invasion of German Samoa by small New Zealand Contingent on 29th. Aug. 1914. The wireless station was protected by a 80 German-officered constabulary of a few dozen men. mss .. "We took Apia without firing a shot .. We only have a ship leaving here about every six weeks or so". Ref: 314-001.

1917 (6th. Sept) Military PC from MALTA to Japan and censored. From Japanese Destroyer 'MOMO'. [The Malta squadron reinforced with the destroyers Kashi, Hinoki, Momo and Yanagi. The four 'Momo’ type cruiser including Yanagi arrived in Malta in August 1917 as the 15th Flotilla with cruiser 'Izumo' to add to the Japanese contribution to convoy protection in the Mediterranean. As the tempo of anti-submarine operations in the Mediterranean accelerated, Japanese sailors temporarily manned two British gunboats, which they designated the Tokyo and Saikyo, and two British destroyers, renamed the Kanran and Sendan] From 'Saito, Destroyer Momo'.
